Student Loans - Work-Study (continued)
The Federal Work-Study Program is also known as FWS.
Under the FWS Program, the student can work part-time
to earn money for their education.
The FWS Program:
- Provides part-time employment while the student is in school.
- Helps pay for educational expenses.
- Is available to full-time or part-time students.
- Is administered by schools participating in the FWS program.
- Encourages community service work and work related to the
students course of study, whenever possible.
Although Federal Work-Study jobs are on campus if you work for your school,
off campus jobs are available from private nonprofit organizations or public agencies.
The work performed must be in the public interest.
Some schools might have agreements with private for-profit employers
for FWS jobs. These jobs must be revelent to the student’s course of study
(to the maximum extent possible).
The total FWS award depends on:
- When the student applies.
- The level of financial need.
- The school’s funding level.
When all funds have been awarded, no additional work-study awards
can be made for that year.
The amount of hours the student works can not exceed the total FWS award.
When assigning hours, the employer or financial aid administrator
will consider the student’s class schedule and academic progress.
