Iron Man - Hero or Zero?
I went to see the movie Iron Man yesterday with my 19 year old son.
I’ll express my opinion in a minute but before I do,
here is an email I received from John Alanis:
Hey guys,
When I was a kid I was a comic book fan. Not a nut, not a
collector, just a fan. I was a Marvel guy–loved Spider Man,
the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and the original Ghost Rider
(the one who burned his enemies souls with hellfire,
not the nice-guy one who showed up later).
So, now that Iron Man’s out, I figured I’d go see if it was any good,
but had no expectations since Robert Downey, Jr. played Tony Stark,
and Jon Favreau (a wimpy wuss, even if Swingers was good)
directed it.
It was, unfortunately, pretty much what I’d expected–
computer graphics run wild, with a bunch of whiney guys on both sides…
nothing like the comic books when I was growing up.
It was a wholly unremarkable movie, and when it was over,
the audience yawned and waddled out–unlike the end
of the last Rambo movie.
You see, an interesting, unexpected thing happened at the end
of Rambo 4, a movie I didn’t expect much from, but thoroughly enjoyed:
the audience, composed of the exact same demographics as the
Iron Man audience stood up and applauded. Loudly.
Why? Because, for the first time in many years, it was a movie
about a strong, unapologetic male hero, something I haven’t seen
in a long, long time. No strong grrrl to rescue him, and no emotional
hand-wringing… just the strong, silent Gary Cooper type
(as Tony Soprano would say).
If you haven’t seen Rambo (the latest one), you should. There is
something “primal” (for lack of a better word) that makes you want
to stand up and applaud at the end–literally. I felt like doing it
(and I rarely applaud anything) and so did the audience. A buddy of
mine saw the movie in Washington DC, and the same thing happened.
There is something about the powerful, unapologetic male hero that
stirs deep emotion within people, and it’s something worth paying
close attention to. You see, it wasn’t only the men applauding,
it was the women.
So, in answer to the question, I’ll take Stallone and Rambo over
Robert Downy, Jr any damn day of the week… and so will
just about any real woman.”
-John Alanis
Now I don’t know how old John Alanis is, but if he “yawned and waddled out”
with the rest of the audience, they must all need Geritol AND One a Day Silver.
My son said, next to Spiderman 2, that was the greatest movie ever made.
I tend to agree. The computer graphics were more spectacular and realistic
than Resident Evil. Robert Downey, Jr as Tony Stark was one cocky, funny
lovable and believable character.
He asks ‘Is it better to be feared or respected?’ and answers with
‘Is it asking too much to want both?’
The guy’s got charisma, chutzpah, the kind we all wish we had.
He lives in a high tech mansion in Malibu that would make Bill Gates envious.
The sophisticated electronics that Tony Stark (Iron Man) has makes the toys
that Batman, Knight Rider and even the cartoon Jetsons had look obsolete.
The plot was plausible with Arab speaking terrorist getting access
to advanced US weaponry and Iron Man coming to help the helpless.
I agree with my son… Iron Man is One of the best movies ever made!
